Well done to all in our first full week at school for 2019. It was hot and tiring. So many things to celebrate and share during the week.
Congratulations to Mr Milan for being the first recipient of the new AKO trophy, and all of the classroom certificate people.

Interesting ways to use Science - what do I know about materials. Technology - what do I know about creating, changing and building. Engineering - using a base for a structure and then building taller. Maths - how to measure how tall it is.

In the previous four weeks of term four the Brooklyn students have all been involved in a rich learning module. Extension and critical thinking about why we celebrate, what we have to celebrate and how the celebration is significant with its traditions and history.

We have looked at Mexico - and the celebration of Dia de los Muertos - Celebrating those we remember.
Our investigation into A & P show traditions covered the agricultural and pastrol flavour and friendly competition, to identify the science and farming craft of our country. These activities led into our pets day.
With Diwali the celebration of light, we were able to work on Indian instruments to create music, Make a diya - a light to follow home, design and indian costume, as well as investigate more of the country and its history.
This week whilst reflecting on Hanami traditions - viewing of the cherry blossom in Japan, we learnt about the country, its people and the significance of the Sakura - its beauty and brief time it presents itself as a spectacle for all to enjoy. Reminding us to remember the little things, and the short time they are there to be appreciated. An Hanami picnic took place under the ash tree - we were able to imagine the blossoms being there as we had blossom strawberries, sponge and chocolate at our Hanami. Carp kites were made, the country located and labelled as well as traditional music investigated and experienced.

Our Brooklyn students worked in mixed groups from 5- 13 years and supported and encouraged each other with their learning.

Shelby - Riley- Harper and Lewis went to the Technology Challenge representing Brooklyn School on Tuesday 25th of October.
Sam - Ryan - Sequoia and Albert on Wednesday 26th October.
Each team did a wonderful job to create, design and test their thinking to the criteria they were given of 4 tasks. It wasn't easy. Sometimes the designs had to be modified and sometimes they had to be abandoned and started again.
Well done to both teams for their effort and thinking. Technological capabilities at their best.

​Brooklyn Olympic Day  - Friendship, Respect and Excellence
On Friday the 19th August the whole school will be travelling by bus and private car to the Motueka Rec Centre to take part in the Brooklyn Olympic Day.  We will be leaving school at 9:15 and assembling in the main stadium at the Rec Centre ready for a 9:45 start. We aim to be finished at 2:30pm travelling back to school in time for buses.
During the day the children will participate in a range of games and all students will be encouraged to embrace the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence. The children have been divided into 10 groups which include students from all classes, year eight children will take on the leadship role of each group.
 
Clothing: The children will need to wear clothing suitable clothing for participating in a range of different physical activities;                                      
track pants or leggings - tee shirt - warm sweatshirt suitable for participating in sports games-  sports shoes (non marking)                                                                         
Students will all require a large drink of water, morning tea snack and a packed lunch. Students will be able to purchase a lunch on Friday which will be made at the Rec Centre. Lunch will consist of sausage and bread, small chippies, fruit and a juice box. This is available at the cost of $5.

Transport: If your child wants to make their own way to the Motueka Recreation Centre on Friday please fill in the form below so teachers are aware of their individual arrangements and transport is able to be allocated on the day.

​In preparation for the Book Fair some senior students brainstormed some ideas of craft items that will be on sale. With the expertise help from Karen Taylor the group delicately and patiently used needle and thread, brightly coloured felt and a little imagination to make some beautifully crafted hand made flowers. 
These flowers will be stitched onto a cushion which will be raffled at the Book Fair - some flower designs shall also be made into badges to then be sold at the Book Fair - the make a great adornment for your school hat - as shown.

We knew to DROP, COVER and HOLD. Some interesting discussions about what the emergency plan is, what we do.
